What an AI Video Ad Really Costs in 2026 (Not Cost Per Second)

In short — A publishable AI video ad — three shots, voiceover, music, edited, vertical — costs roughly $4 to $43 in generation, depending entirely on which model renders it. Nearly every pricing guide online quotes cost per second of raw clip, which is the wrong unit for an advertiser: an ad isn't one clip, and the clips you throw away cost the same as the ones you ship. This guide breaks down the four costs that per-second pricing hides, using real production figures from the 13 video models we run.

Why "cost per second" is the wrong number

Search for AI video pricing and you'll find a dozen comparison tables quoting figures like "$0.03 per second" or "$0.40 per second." Two problems.

First, the published numbers don't agree with each other. Across the aggregator sites currently ranking for this query, Veo 3.1 Lite appears at both $0.03/second and $0.05/second, and Kling 3.0 at anywhere from $0.09 to $0.14/second — differences that come from mixing resolutions, audio on/off, and reseller markups without saying so. Any table that quotes a single number per model is hiding a variable.

Second, and more importantly: a video ad is not a clip. A per-second price answers "what does eight seconds of footage cost." It does not answer "what does an ad I can put behind ad spend cost." Those differ by a factor of four or more, because of the four costs below.

The four costs per-second pricing hides

1. An ad is several shots, not one

A vertical direct-response ad that actually converts is usually three shots: a hook, the product benefit, and a call to action. Some run five. One 8-second clip isn't an ad; it's a third of one. Whatever the per-second price, multiply by your shot count first.

2. Voiceover and music are separate generations

Unless your model produces native speech, each shot needs a voiceover pass, and the ad needs a background track. These are small individual costs that people forget entirely when budgeting from a per-second table — but they're per-ad costs, every time.

3. Retries are the real tax

This is the cost nobody publishes. Not every generation is usable: a hand renders wrong, the product label warps, the motion is off. In practice you regenerate some shots. If you budget as though every generation ships, your real cost per published ad will land well above your estimate. Budget for one regenerated shot per ad as a baseline, and more when you're working with a difficult product.

4. Failed generations still cost money — unless they don't

Some tools charge you for a generation that errors out. That's worth checking before you commit, because at volume it's a meaningful line item. (For what it's worth, we automatically credit failed generations back, which is why we can quote per-ad numbers with a straight face.)

The spread between models is enormous

Here's the finding that matters most, from our own production pricing across the 13 models we run (Veo 3.1, Seedance 2.0 and Kling 3.0 families):

The cost per second of finished video varies by a factor of 18 between the cheapest and most expensive model — for the same 9:16 vertical ad, at the same length.

That's a bigger range than most people assume, and it means model choice, not tool choice, is usually the biggest lever on your creative budget. It also means a tool that locks you to one model has made that decision for you.

What a complete ad actually costs

The practical read: most advertisers should be spending $4 to $15 per ad, not $40. The premium tiers earn their price on hero creative and brand work — not on the twentieth variant you're testing this week.

How that compares to the alternatives

  • AI actor tools that bill per finished video: Arcads sits at roughly $11 per video on its published plan structure (~$110/month for 10 videos). Predictable, and more expensive than most AI-generated product ads.
  • Human UGC creators: typically $100–$300 per video (Influee), plus briefing and turnaround time measured in days.
  • A video editor on retainer: several hundred dollars a month before a single extra variant.

The gap is why creative volume changed: when a variant costs $5 instead of $150, testing ten of them stops being a budget decision.

Why cheapest-per-ad isn't automatically right

Two honest caveats against optimizing purely on price.

Resolution matters less than you think, up to a point. Feed video is watched on a phone, compressed by the platform. 4K rarely pays for itself in a performance ad — it pays for itself in a brand film. Going from 720p to 4K roughly triples your cost per ad in the table above, for a difference most viewers will never see in-feed.

But a bad render costs more than a cheap one. If the low-cost model mangles your product, you've paid twice — once for the reject, once for the retry — and you've spent your own time. For products with fine detail, text on packaging, or complex geometry, starting with a mid-tier model is usually cheaper in the end than three attempts on the cheapest.

The rule that survives contact with reality: use the cheap model for volume testing, and move the winners up a tier before you put real spend behind them.

How to budget, concretely

For a store shipping creative weekly:

  1. Decide your shot count (three is the default that works).
  2. Pick a mid-tier model for testing — expect $5 to $10 per finished ad.
  3. Add 20–30% for regenerated shots.
  4. Reserve a premium-model budget for the two or three creatives that win, where higher fidelity is worth paying for.

At ten test ads a month, that's roughly $60–$130 in generation — less than a single human UGC video, and less than most tools' monthly subscription.

The takeaway

Per-second pricing is a useful number for engineers building on an API. It's the wrong number for an advertiser, because it prices the raw material and not the thing you actually publish. Price your finished ad, count your retries, and treat model choice as the budget lever it is — an 18× spread is not a rounding error.
